How to clear out a packed garage without losing a whole weekend
Almost everyone has that garage. The one where you park the car outside because the inside filled up years ago. Clearing it out feels like a huge job, but it does not have to eat your whole Saturday. Here is the way we tell our neighbors to tackle it.
Start with four piles
Before you move a single box, decide where things go. Four simple piles makes the whole thing easier:
- Keep: stuff you actually use and have a place for.
- Donate: good condition, just not yours anymore.
- Haul: broken, worn out, or done. This is the pile we take.
- Not sure: give yourself one small pile for the maybes so you do not freeze up on every item.
Work one zone at a time
Do not try to do the whole garage at once. Pick one wall or one corner and finish it before moving on. Seeing one section actually cleared gives you the push to keep going. Most garages have a back corner that has not seen daylight in years. Save that for when you have momentum.
Be honest about the maybe pile
Here is the truth most of us avoid: if you have not touched it in two years and you forgot you owned it, you are probably not going to use it. The broken tools, the dried-out paint, the exercise machine that became a coat rack. It is okay to let it go.
